Week 3 Information and Slide Show

We have had a great week this past week.  The first graders worked really hard building Stamina in read to self,  and writing.   We did such a great job that we were able to introduce read with someone. The students love reading with a partner and sharing all kinds of great books.  In writing we continued learning all about our first grade friends and have continued to interview and write sentences interactively and in our friend journals about our classmates.  We also learned about 5 star sentences (sentences with capitals, punctuation, spaces, good spelling, and do they make sense).  We are using 5 star sentences to remind us how to write great sentences during or Daily 5 writing block.  Our word-study focus this week was looking at the middle vowel sounds a and o.  We sorted pictures and wrote words that have these middle vowel sounds.  The TRIBES agreements that we focused on was Attentive listening and Mutual respect.  We read stories about listening and also on what it takes to show mutual respect.

This week we will continue to work on the components of Daily 5.  We will learn about listen to reading and will get to use the chrome books explore some different read aloud book sites.  Later in the week I will give you some great book sites that your child may use at home.  We will continue to interview our friends and write 5 star sentences about them as a class and in our friend journals. We will continue to explore Mutual Respect and begin to look at No Put-downs.

We will be starting our Guided Reading groups this week.  Your child will be bringing home a book to read in their binder Monday or Tuesday.  Please read this book as part of your 20 minutes of reading.  We will also be starting sight words. These will be in your child's binder in a clear page protector, on Tuesday.  Please practice these words nightly we will have sight word assessments every Thursday. Thank you for all you do!!!

Week 2 - 8/24 -8/27

Hello first grade families,

We had a great first week of school.  I am excited about beginning our second week.  Last week we developed our classroom community and learned all about our Tribes agreements. We started building stamina for our Daily 5 reading components.  We shopped for books and began reading to self.
We wrote in our friend journals. Our focus is writing sentences with capitals, spaces, punctuation and proper letter formation. Students interviewed our helpers of the day and we used those answers to write at least 2 sentences about our friend.

This week we will continue building our reading stamina, introduce our second Daily 5 component which is Work on Writing and introduce choice into our Daily 5 block.  We will continue to learn about our helpers and use complete sentences to write about them in "Our Friend Journals".  The class will look more closely at the TRIBES agreements: Attentive listening and Mutual Respect.

On Wednesday after lunch each week we have our specials class.  This quarter our specials class is Community Service with Mrs. Brubeck. We are learning about Kindness, and read The Kindness Poem.  This poem will be in your child's binder for them to read to you.

REMINDERS

Hello First Grade Families,

We had a wonderful first day. Hopefully you have heard all about the Magic Play Dough and our key chain glyphs.

Please remember to send back all those papers that were in the binder on Back to School Night.  Many people forgot to send in page 15 in the student hand book. Please check your student handbook and make sure to sign and return it.

Homework this week will be to decorate the cover of their binder.  We would like these completed by Thursday so we can share them during community circle.  Also, if your child didn't complete the Picture of Me! page please have them complete this as soon as possible.

Looking forward to a great school year.

Welcome to the first week of first grade!!!

The first week of school is upon us!!!  I am super excited for school to start and for the chance to work with all the wonderful first graders this year.  I will meet the students on the playground when the whistle blows.  Remind your first grader to look for me.  We will line up and begin our morning routines.

Please make sure your child has a snack for our morning snack break/recess. It may be helpful to tell your child what their snack is and to pack it separately from their lunch.  Also, Please mark your child's snack with their name.  Make sure your child's name is on everything that comes to school and please, leave toys at home.

Don't forget to have your child return their white binder received at "Back to School Night"  with  all the important papers completed as soon as possible.

I forgot to mention that I will keep our blog updated with all their homework, including that from Ms. Garcia's math class.

I am looking forward to a Super School year!
