This week we will ...
  • finish up our unit on light and sound, by learning all about the materials light can travel through.
  • take an assessment on nouns.
  • follow direction to complete a directed draw and then write one of each type of sentence about our drawing.
  • We  will not have spelling this week!
Thursday will be our Christmas party.  We will be decorating cookies and rotating through some fun crafts and games.

Week 14 - 12/11-12/14

Hello first grade families,

Wow! This school year is just zooming by.  I can't believe we only have 2 weeks until winter break.  We still have so much learning to get in.

Last week we...

  • Learned about Declarative sentences (these are sentences that make a statement).
  • Learned all about how sounds are made from vibrations and that the pitch of sounds can be high or low.
  • Learned all about possessive nouns.  Nouns that show possession and have an apostrophe s.
  • started our opinion writings.

This week we will...
  • learn about the other 3 types of sentences (interrogative, imperative and exclamatory)
  • finish our opinion writings.
  • explore how light travels in straight lines and explore the materials light can and can't go through. (transparent, translucent and opaque),
  • Along with our science unit on light and sound we will use our sense to complete a writing project.
Reminder boys basketball sign ups are currently open. Check this out if you think you son might enjoy this sport.

We will have a Christmas celebration on December 21, from noon to 1.  There will be more on this soon.

Week 14: December 11th - 14th

The first graders took an assessment on graphing.  They did a great job as it was a long test.  They are having trouble distinguishing between fewer and most.  Which goes back to finding the difference between two pieces of data.  Also, we have focused on addition and combining groups of however, this concept also crosses over into graphing because the students must combine certain groups to find a sum of how many students collected data.  We will re-visit graphing again after the 1st of the year.

The first graders will be working with shapes until Winter Break.
This week the first graders will focus on both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes.  As a class we will name 2-dimensional shapes, draw and discuss open vs. closed shapes and will count sides and vertices of shapes.

    Math news from Miss Garcia

This week in math Mrs. Bloomfield and I will introduce graphing.  We will gather and count amounts of data.  So far, we have only focused on Pictographs.  However, the students will learn several types of graphs: pictographs, bar graphs and tally charts.  The first grade standard states that your child must be able to organize, represent and interpret data with up to 3 categories AND ask/answer questions about the data in each category.  Here are a few examples of the graphs that your child will be able to “read” and gather information from.  We focus on stating the questions when reading graphs as: “How many more, how many less” as well as “altogether.”

The students will also continue to take several mini assessments for the end of the Trimester.

Time is flying by I can't believe we only have 1 more week until fall break and Thanksgiving.

Last week the first graders presented their posters to the 2nd and 6th graders. They did an amazing job working on these projects. I will post pictures of the groups and their amazing posters later this week.

Last week we also had a few visitors to our classroom...

    • Molly Dahl  taught us about mindful breathing and how it helps up learn.
    • Mrs. Craig taught us all about the job of a Emergency Room nurse.
    • Mr. McCormick came with his flight gear. He told us what it is like to be in the military.
    • Mr. & Mrs. Heath visited us and told us all about being a doctor.
Thank you to all these wonderful community helpers for taking time out of their busy schedules and visit with us. WE APPRECIATE all our community helpers!!

This week in first grade we will begin an new project. We will learn all about where we live on the map and who is in charge. We will also learn all about nouns and continue to identify the problem and solution of the story!!

    Homework
We will not be doing formal reading groups this week so your child will not be bringing home a book to read.  They are more than welcome to borrow books from my library if they would like. Please choose a book to read for their night reading. Since Thursday begins our break we will only have reading homework Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

    Reading over Break
If your child chooses to read over Fall Break please make sure to log their reading.  If they read for 20 minutes 5 of the days of break they will get a reward when they return to school. This is totally optional.

    Math News from Miss Garcia

This week in first grade the students used Number Bonds to create fact families.  A picture of our fact families was posted on the Oasis Facebook page, check them out!  They also reviewed methods of subtraction and completed several mini assessments throughout the week.

Mrs. Bloomfield and myself continue to have the students write answer statements when they are problem solving.  Answer statements fit in perfectly with “Format Matters” which we use when answering a question.

This week we will work on the correlation between addition and subtraction, using a number line and a hundred chart to count on or back and focus on subtraction equations.

    Week 10 -- 11/6/17

Fall finally feels like it is here. The weather is definitely cooling down especially in the mornings.  Please make sure your child wears layers so they are comfortable with these crazy temperatures.

We had a excitingly busy week last week. We had a visit from the Sheriff's office (Thank you Officer Maynez) telling us all about their job and how they are community helpers. We got to look at their cool tools and their police car.  We also had our Halloween party which was a lot of fun!! Thank you to Mrs. Piexoto, Mrs. Pheasey, Mrs. Pascoe, Mrs. Wadsworth for planning the fun activities for us to do. Also a big thank you to Mrs. Craig for making our spooky treats.  Along with all this excitement we managed to work hard on our community helper projects. We also go in some fun Halloween writing too.

1st Quarter ended on Thursday.  However, Oasis Academy has moved to trimesters except for Specials.  This means that your child will receive a report card 3 times this year instead of 4 and they rotate into another special on Monday: For our class it is Music with Mrs. Barton.

Below you will find a slide show of our fun filled week.

    Math news from Miss Garcia

Well, we are getting better at saying “Commutative Property!”  Last week I had listed the following example.

Here’s an example of Commutative Property:
    7 + 2 = 9
    2 + 7 = 9

Now we are taking it one step further by finding the missing addend in an equation.  For example:  __+ 3 = 9 or 6 + __ = 9

Again, this will also lead the 1st graders into working with Fact Families!
Here’s an example of a Fact Family (in which the students will eventually fill in the missing addend, subtrahend, difference or sum:
    __ + 2 = 9
    2 + __ = 9
    9 - __ = 7
    9 - 7 = __

Here are a few more examples, this is one way that we set them up in class, in a “Fact Family House.”
    Fun Family Activities
Continue to skip count by 10’s, 5’s and even 2’s driving in the car or playing outside.  We learned the “Zero Rule”...Any number added to zero is the same number!  We are also keeping track of Data during or weekly graphs.  Make a family graph at home!

    Happy Monday

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. The weather was beautiful!

The temperature is crazy with freezing lows in the morning and highs in the 80's in the afternoons.  This means that we have a lot of clothing layers.  Please make sure to label your child's clothing. It is hard to locate missing clothing if they are not labeled.

    Halloween
We will be celebrating Halloween on Tuesday October 31st.  Your child may wear their costume to school. Please make sure their costume covers as much as their uniform. We will be having a costume parade for the students in the morning and will have a Halloween party in the afternoon from 1:00 to 2:00. If you would like to help out with our celebration please let me know.  We need 2 more volunteers to plan a game or craft for our party.

    Last Week in first grade...

    • first graders practice sorting words according to how many syllables they have.
    • Groups worked on their Community Helper projects.  The 6th graders came and helped the first graders find pictures for their projects.
    • We practiced an Earth quake drill.
    • The fire fighters visited and taught us all about fire safety.
    • learned about fiction stories.
    • First graders practiced good habits of discussion
    This week we will...
    • Continue to work on our Community Helper projects by creating a poster
    • learn all about non - fiction books
    • Learn about closed syllables (syllables with 1 vowel, followed by 1 or more consonant and the vowel is short)
    • Sort word according to long or short vowel
1st graders will be starting spelling this week. You will find their spelling list for the week in their binders. 1st graders will practice their words in class during Daily 5 each day and will test on these words Thursday.

    1st Grade Blog
    Week 8 - October 23rd - 26th

At first the students worked with number lines in class by counting on and then writing and equation (6+2=8).  The next day we carried this concept one step further by going out into the hallway to use the “Big” number line.  As we used the number line to count on and add one number to another, we also used the Commutative Property to rewrite our equations!  Let me tell you, that is a mouthful for the kids to say and they usually end up saying “community property.”  We are working on it!

The students are better at writing the Commutative Property than saying it!
Here’s an example of Commutative Property:
    7 + 2 = 9
    2 + 7 = 9

By introducing the students to the Commutative Property this concept will soon lead into Fact Families which we will be learning about soon.
Here’s an example of a Fact Family:
    7 + 2 = 9
    2 + 7 = 9
    9 - 2 = 7
    9 - 7 = 2

    Fun Family Activities
Skip count by 10’s, 5’s and even 2’s driving in the car or playing outside.  Also work on counting on from any number up to 100.  Another fun activity is using a deck of cards or UNO cards and flipping two cards and comparing them using greater than, less than, equal too or taking two playing cards and writing them into an equation and adding them together.
