Quarter 4 -- Week1

Hello first grade families,

I can't believe how fast the year is doing by. Can you believe we only have 9 weeks of first grade??? There is still a lot of learning we have to get in before our wonderful firsties become 2nd graders, so we will continue to work hard.

This is what we did last week in 1st Grade:

• We wrote some wonderful poems, including I wish poems, ing poems using adjective and I like poems. 
• We began our narrative writing unit and zeroed in on a small moment in our lives that we want to write about. 
• We read some fun poetry books including "Where the Sidewalk Ends".
• We watched the 2nd grades presentation on animals and compared them to our work on animals.
• Mrs. Rowlett worked on all the 3rd quarter assessments.

Here is a look at this week...

• Our spelling pattern will be ee words (free, tree, three etc.)
• We will create more wonderful poetry including Important poems and Hiaku's.
• We will continue our work on our narrative stories by drawing the beginning and end and writing about each part of our small moment.

Week 29

March 14th-17th

I simply can’t believe that it is March 14th!  We start 4th Quarter today along with learning about fractions!  Fractions are so much fun and there are a ton of activities/projects to do too!  The first graders will partition circles and rectangles from a “whole” into (two) ½ and( four) ¼ equal parts.  We will also discuss (thirds) ⅓.

Your 1st grader will also be able to tell the differences between shapes that are divided in equal pieces.

Quarter 3 Week 10

Happy Monday!!!

This is the last week of 3rd Quarter.  Thursday, March 10th, will be the last day of the quarter.  Wow!  The time has been flying by!

Conferences are coming up real soon!! A sign up genius went out on Friday. Please make sure to sign up for a parent teacher conference. If you are unable to meet during any of the times listed please let me know and we can arrange a time that better fits your schedule. If you are unable to attend or need to cancel please make sure to cancel/change your time on the sign up genius. Thank you to everyone who has already signed up! I look forward to sharing your child's wonderful progress with you.

This week in first grade we...

• created acrostic poems using our names
• drew self portraits
• created a color poem
• read some great Dr. Seuss book including the Big Brag, Yertle the Turtle, Gertrude McFuzz, and Thidwick the Big Hearted Moose. All of these great Dr. Seuss book have a message. We discussed the message and how we can apply it to our lives.
• On the hundredth day of school we wrote about how we are 100 Days smarter at Oasis with all the great things we learned this year. 

This week we will...

• Continue assessments for report cards.
• Continue our poetry unit.
• Begin to write personal narratives by choosing a small moment to write about.
• Our spelling pattern this week is ain words (rain, pain, drain etc.)

Math News From Miss Garcia

Week 28

Hello and Happy Monday!  The first graders will continue to work on Branch Addition and Subtraction.  Focusing on addition on Monday and Tuesday, then subtraction Wednesday and Thursday.  We will also be completing some 3rd quarter assessments.  3rd Quarter ends this Thursday, March 10th!  We cannot believe how fast the time has gone by!  These kiddos have made some much progress since last August!  

Here are some subtraction examples for Wednesday and Thursday’s Homework.

Quarter 3 Week 9

Happy Leap Day!!

Thank you once again for being such a great audience for the first graders to present their slideshows to. They worked hard and were so excited to present them to friends and families. Remember they can be found under animal slide shows on the page tab on the top of the blog.  Your child may present them to any family member that wasn't able to make it.  

Last week in first grade we...

• perfected our slideshows by presenting to other first graders, the 2nd graders and a parent helper.
• learned all about prepositions and we wrote sentences with prepositions.
• has an assessment on conjunctions, but will continue to practice using these to make complex and compound sentences/.
• created a circle map on one of the other 1st graders animals and wrote an informational paragraph using this information.

This week is an eventful week!  We will be celebrating the 100 day of school (on Tuesday) and Dr. Seuss's birthday (on Wednesday).

                                            

Math News from Miss Garcia

Dear 1st Grade Parents,

Welcome to the last day of February and the only occurring once every 4 years--Leap Day!!

In math first grade students finished their unit on time.  Our main focus was using digital and analog clocks to read and write time to the hour and half hour.  Students also worked on showing times to the nearest hour and half hour on analog clocks.

                   

Students are catching onto telling time rather quickly but it is a skill that takes some practice (especially on analog clocks)!

Week 27 Homework

We will be working on adding 2 digit numbers within 100 by using the Branch Method.  Here is an example listed below.  Basically by looking at the following examples the kids are decomposing to group make tens and ones by adding like place values.
