Quarter 2 Week 2

Happy Halloween from Oasis Academy!

It is always a fun time at Oasis Academy when Halloween comes around because the kids get to wear costumes to school instead of their uniforms. Monday will be a fun day of learning as well as doing fun activities at our party. Your child will be meeting in class for reading and math in the morning.  Due to trick or treating happening in the evening on Monday we will not have any assigned reading homework.  Reading homework will be as usual for the rest of the week. Please remember to wear your costume and if if you choose NOT to then you must wear your uniform to school.

REMINDER: Parent Teacher Conferences begin this Friday.  I will be sending home a reminder email showing all of the conference times that are planned.  I look forward to meeting with all of you beginning on Friday.

The Scholastic Fair also begins Monday.  The book fair is set up the dungeon and is very successful due the the volunteer work of our many dedicated parents!  Stop by and check out the book fair.  Family Night is Wednesday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Our Class will visit on Tuesday to make our wish lists.

Week 9 Math News from Miss Garica

Well, we are getting better at saying “Commutative Property!”  Last week I had listed the following example.
Here’s an example of Commutative Property:
7 + 2 = 9
2 + 7 = 9

Now we are taking it one step further by finding the missing addend in an equation.  For example:  __+ 3 = 9 or 6 + __ = 9

Again, this will also lead the 1st graders into working with Fact Families!
Here’s an example of a Fact Family (in which the students will eventually fill in the missing addend, subtrahend, difference or sum:
__ + 2 = 9
2 + __ = 9
9 - __ = 7
9 - 7 = __

Here are a few more examples, this is one way that we set them up in class, in a “Fact Family House.”
Fun Family Activities
Continue to skip count by 10’s, 5’s and even 2’s driving in the car or playing outside.  We learned the “Zero Rule”...Any number added to zero is the same number!  We are also keeping track of Data during or weekly graphs.  Make a family graph at home!

Tuesday
