Happy Monday!!

Happy Volunteer Appreciation Week! I want to thank all the wonderful first grade families for everything they do to help out both in our classroom and also at home with your child.  We appreciate you!!!

Where did the time go??? Can you believe we only have 20 days left of school.  It really seems like this year is flying by! We still have so much to do! 


Last week in first grade we...

• finished our rough drafts of our small moment narratives.
• practiced using commas when listing and also when writing the date.
• finished our solar patterns unit.

This week we will...

• continue our Narrative Writing unit by adding details to our writing.
• practice spelling words that have the -oil spelling pattern (spoil, boiling, oily)
• begin discussing needs and wants and talk about how money is spent.
• identify root words.

Happy Volunteer Appreciation Week!  Thank you for ALL that you do to go above and beyond to help your children and the teachers of O.A..

We are down to the last 20 days of school…which is SCARY & EXCITING at the same time!  There is still a bunch of math concepts, strategies and assessments to work on and complete.  The teachers are also busy re-assessing most concepts taught in order to see if your child has mastered them by the end of the year.

Our focus this week in first grade will be to add two, 2-digit numbers by using 2 different strategies: Branch Addition (which the kids are familiar with) and Arrow Method, which will be a new concept that we will focus on for Wednesday and Thursday.  Both examples are listed below.

Branch Method Examples:

Example   31 + 6 = 52 + 12 =

                    ↙ ↘   ↘                                           ↙ ↘   ↙ ↘

                  30 + (1 + 6) =                                 50  2  10  2

30 + 7 = 37       (50+10) + (2+2) =

                                                                              60   +  4  = 64

Arrow Method Example:

53  +  34  =                1.  Start with the bigger addend (53).

   + 30     +4

53 → 83 →87        2.  Draw an arrow.  Break down the other addend (34) into tens(30)

and ones (4).                                       

                                 3.  Above the arrow write a plus sign and the amount of tens (+30).     

Write the subtotal.after the arrow (83).

                                  4.  Draw another arrow after the subtotal. Above the arrow write a

plus sign and the amount of ones (+4).  Write the total (87).

Quarter 4 Week 4

Happy Monday!!!

I hope everyone had a great weekend!!! It was nice getting to spend time with family!

Last week in first grade was a busy one.  The first graders worked hard on their small moment narratives. Most of the students have finished their actual small moment narratives and will begin on what happened before that small moment and afterwards. The stories the students are writing are marvelous!! They are so creative and have grown so much in writing. It is so fun to see. We also explored sunrise, sunset and how the Earth's rotation causes the seasons. 

This week we will be...

• Looking at commas in dates.
• finishing up our small moment narratives and begin to add text features to our writing.
• look at the phases of the moon and comparing the moon to earth and the sun.
• Practice words in the oom pattern.

Math News from Miss Garcia

Our focus this week in first grade will be: Graphing, Fact Families, and both adding AND subtracting multiples of 10 from a given number.  The 1st graders have been working on this concept however, the standard states that they must MENTALLY know 10 more, 10 less and 1 more, 1 less than a given number.  So, while the kids are working with partners on this concept during an activity, Mrs. Bloomfield and I will be calling students back one at a time assessing them mentally.  Remember, this is a concept that they students can work on at home using their 100 chart that is in their binder.

Quarter 4 Week 3

Hello First Grade Families,

Spring is such a busy, busy time of year!! All the spring sports are in full swing, which means lots of late nights. Please remember to make homework a priority. 

Last week in first grade we...

• finished typing our poems. Our Poetry Journals will be coming home soon.
• finished our quick sketches for our small moment narratives.
• looked at the earth and how it moves around the sun. We learned some great facts about the time it takes and how fast we are moving. Be sure to ask your child to tell you all about it.
• decided where commas go when writing.

This week we will

• begin writing our small moment stories.
• explore the Earth, Sun and Moon in more detail.
• decide where commas belong when writing the date.

Math News From Miss Garcia,

I just got back from National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Conference in  San Antonio!  I am so thankful that Oasis Academy and our administrators gave the math team this great opportunity!

Since it is 4th Quarter, we have already taught most math standards.  At this point, Mrs. Bloomfield and I are focusing re-assessing previous standards as well as pulling in some standards that we previously taught that the students have NOT yet mastered.  

I know that it is a busy time of year however, please continue to read and complete your daily math homework!
