Week 19 -- 1/29-2/1

Hello First Grade Families.

I wanted to give a shout out to the first graders!! They are doing an amazing job with their spelling.  I am seeing these patterns transfer over to their writing.

I can't believe that this is our last week in January. This trimester is going by quickly.  We have been busy, busy learning. The first graders are making great progress.

Last week in First Grade...

  • we began our informational books about penguins. As a class we are researching penguins and using the information we learn to write a non-fiction book. This book will include a table of contents, bold print words a glossary and an index. It also contains a diagram with labels and pictures with captions.
  • We learned all about verbs.
  • we compared open and closed syllable words/
  • We completed an assessment on type 4 types of syllables.
  • We read Tacky the Penguin books. (which are loads of fun)
This week we will...
  • continue our non-fiction penguin book; including what they eat, where they live, their life cycles and cool facts about them.
  • continue to locate and use verbs in sentences.
  • review the 4 sentence types (this is confusing to most 1st graders)
  • Compare and contrast 2 Tacky books.
  • Use open and closed syllables to spell and decode words.
Congratulations to all the students who received perfect attendance. This was a difficult task to do with all the illness that has been going around.

Math news from Miss Garcia

I cannot believe that it is the last week of January and the beginning of February!  The first graders finished up their unit on Non-standard measurement unit and moved onto composing (making) and decomposing (breaking down) to make a sum of ten.  This will also continue to introduce the students to the Associative Property.

On Tuesday, January 30th, Oasis Academy will be hosting Family Math Night.  All families will meet in the cafeteria at 5:30 and then break out into different classrooms for fun games and math activities.  Mrs. Bloomfield will have 2nd math activities and I will have activities geared towards 1st Graders in Room 3.  See you there!

Associative Property:
Add 2 + (6 + 4) = 2 + 10 = 12
The 6 and 4 can be used to compose a 10.  So.... 2 + 10 = 12

Mrs. Bloomfield and I always send home an example on the homework pages:  Here is an example of decomposing 4 into 2 and 2 in order to compose a 10 by adding 8 to 2.
Example:
8 + 4 = ___
                                                    ↙ ↘  (decompose 4 into 2 & 2)
                                                   2    2 (add the 8 to 2 to compose a 10)
                                    (8+2)  =  10  +  2 = 12
Happy February!

I hope everyone had a great weekend. it is finally feeling like winter out there. Please make sure to write your child's name on their loose clothing articles, it is hard for us to look for and find their clothing if their name is not on it.
Last week in first grade....
  • we learned about why Martin Luther Kings was an important man in our history.
  • we reviewed all types of nouns. First graders are confusing proper an plural nouns.
  • we reviewed open and closed syllables. Have your first grader tell you the difference.
  • We worked on non-fiction text features including diagrams, timelines, captions and photographs.
  • practiced each of the 4 types of sentences. (declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory)
This week we will...
  • Take an assessment on possessive and plural nouns.
  • practice writing complex sentences of each type.
  • learn about verbs.
  • begin a research project on penguins.
  • Complete our non fiction text feature book and begin using these features in our books about penguins.
***WE WILL HAVE SPELLING WORDS AND A TEST THIS WEEK!!

Valentine's Day!!

Valentines day will be on a school day this year. Our class will be exchanging valentines. If your child would like to bring a valentine for each student please have them only sign their names do not put who it is too.  This make handing out the cards much quicker.  We have 24 kids in our class. Mrs. Jackson and myself will be providing a treat for the kids. We will also play some fun games on that afternoon.

Math News from Miss Garcia

We continued to work on non-standard measurement this week.  The first grade students will be able to distinguish between a longer vs. shorter object as well as compare 3 objects by length.  They also used rulers to measure to the nearest inch.

All week the 1st graders used manipulatives such as: tiles, cubes, paperclips and discs to compare “about” how long a specific object was in length.  They also filled out a table and were required to choose an object to measure, estimate its length and record its actual length.  They then had to discuss their findings with several classroom partners.  Estimation is a difficult concept for 1st graders to understand.

This week, as a class, we will focus on addition of 3 numbers within word problems.  We will begin to compose and decompose to make a sum of ten or greater.  This will also introduce the students to the Associative Property.

Associative Property:
Add 2 + (6 + 4) = 2 + 10 = 12
The 6 and 4 can be used to compose a 10.  So…  2 + 10 = 12

Week 18 Homework

Tuesday

Math News from Miss Garcia

In math, the first grade students are working on measurement.  There was a lot of discussion of shorter vs. longer.  We compared our classmates and objects within the classroom using short, shorter, shortest as well as long, longer, longest for our math vocabulary.  They also ordered 3 different objects by length.  The students used both small and large paper clips, tiles, cubes, string and ribbon as various “non-standard” measuring tools.

Some examples of non-standard measuring tools.

Here is a saying we use in order to measure with accuracy.  There are hand movements to go with it… “End to end, no gaps, no overlaps.”  Have them say and show you!  We will continue to practice this week.
