This week we will continue to work on telling time to the hour and half hour using analog clocks.  We focused on this concept at the end of the week last week however, still need much more practice telling time.

The first graders will also be using a 100 chart to find 10 more, 10 less and 1 more, 1 less than a given number between 1 - 100.  Remember that your child has a 100 chart in their binder along with a number line as a resource to use for their homework.

A Math Message from Mrs. Bloomfield

First Graders are continuing to work on decomposing and composing numbers to make a group of 10 and 20!  This has been a challenging concept for many of the students to “get.”  This week will be just as challenging; the students will be working within 100.  They will decompose a two digit number to get to the next “10” by decomposing a two digit number.  Please look at the example below in case you or your child is unsure of what the steps to complete the homework.

Here is an example of this week's homework:
    34    +    12  = ___
    ↙ ↘        ↙ ↘                   1.Decompose 34 into 30 and 4 and 12 into 10 and 2
    30   4 +  10  2                  2.Combine “like” place value; tens and ones
    (30 + 10) + (4 + 2)           3. Add 30 and 10 then add 4 and 2
      ↘  ↙           ↘  ↙
       40     +       6 = 46         4. Add 10’s and 1’s together to find the sum.

President’s Day will be celebrated on February 19th.  Oasis will not have school on Monday, February 19th!

Monday, February 12th is President Lincoln’s Birthday and Thursday, February 15th is President Washington’s Birthday.  I wonder if we could figure out how old each President would be…?

    February 12th - 15th

    Tuesday
Worksheet - Add a two digit number to a two digit number
    Wednesday

    Week 20 - 2/5-2/8

    Happy February First Grade Families,

Mrs. Bloomfield and Miss Garcia wanted to give a A GIGANTIC thank you to all that were able to come to Math Night last Tuesday!  It was great to see so many families enjoying playing math games and working on math puzzles!  We are hoping to make this an annual event!!

We can't believe that just changed the calendar pieces from January to February!!  How can we be done with the first calendar month of 2018???

Last week first graders were busy, busy...
    • We reviewed nouns and verbs.
    • We learned all about adjectives.
    • review open and closed syllables.
    • We worked on our penguin research project books. We researched where they live and added bold print words that we will include in our glossaries.
    •  We are still working on adding proper punctuation to our sentences. This is a struggle for first graders.
    This Week We will...
    • Add cool facts to our non-fiction penguin books.
    • learn all about the life cycle of a penguin.
    • put word in abc order to add to our glossaries and indexes.
    • Choose the animal to research with a partner.
    • Use adjectives to make empty nouns exciting.
    • Learn about the vowel consonant e syllable type.
Below are a few pictures of the syllable types.

    Valentines day
The first graders will be exchanging Valentines on Feb. 14th.  If you child would like to send in Valentines for the other classmates please be sure to bring 1 for each student and have your child only sign their names.

    Math News from Miss Garcia
    Happy Monday!  Last week our 1st grade classes focused on adding two;
1 digit numbers to compose (make) a group of 10 without “renaming.”
This week we are introducing adding a two digit number to a one digit
number without renaming.  This is going to be DIFFICULT for most students.
Please refer to the examples below AND have them use their 100 charts in their
binder as a tool to count on.  You are NOT helping your child out by just telling
them the answer.  We have taught them many strategies in order to figure out
    equations.

    Examples:

     23 + 4 = 27 54 + 2 = 56
     ↙ ↘  (decompose 23 into 20 and 3) ↙ ↘  (decompose 54 into 50 and 4)
    20 + (3 + 4)   add 3 and 4       50   (4 + 2)  add 4 and 2
            ↘↙ ↘↙
    20   +   7  =  27              50  +  6 = 56

    Happy Monday!
