Quarter 2 -- Week 5 - SLIDESHOW

Image result for thanksgiving

Dear First Grade Families,

Time sure does fly when you are having fun!!! We had a great week in first grade. This week we continued our Where in The World project and used Google Maps to look at where we go to school, our town, county, state and country.  We learned who the leaders are of these wonderful places. First graders wrote about all the great and fun things we have and can do in our community.  In language we learned about common and proper nouns.

On Thursday Mrs.  Beebe came in and we became scientist. We walked through the scientific method to conduct some really fun science experiments.  Ask your child to share some of the great learning that happened in our classroom. Below you will find a slide show of these fun experiments.

This week in First Grade:

  • We will not have any spelling words due to the short week.
  • We will begin some report card assessments instead of having reading groups.  There will not be assigned books this week.
  • We will learn about our continent (North America) and learn about the the three countries that are part of that continent (Canada, United States, and Mexico)
  • We will complete an ABC order assessment
  • We will listen to a Thanksgiving story and write the beginning, middle, and end of the story
  • We will practice writing 5 word sentences in nice handwriting about different pictures that have to do with Thanksgiving.

This week is we will only be in school on Monday and Tuesday.  We will not have normal reading homework this week. Mrs. Loop and I will be assessing first graders -- with our mid - quarter assessments.  It is always good to stay in the routine of reading daily. I will be sending home a reading log for your child to complete, if they choose to read over the Holiday. Remember this is optional.

Math News from Miss Garcia
Happy Monday!  Mrs. Bloomfield and I will be busy squeezing in ALL of the learning that we need on Monday and Tuesday before our Thanksgiving Break!

We noticed that the 1st graders are really struggling with graphing.  They are having trouble distinguishing between fewer and most.  Which goes back to finding the difference between two pieces of data.  Also, we have focused on addition and combining groups of however, this concept also crosses over into graphing because the students must combine certain groups to find a sum of how many students collected data.  We are noticing a gap in some of the academic vocabulary and how the students are unable to “link” it to reading the information on a graph.  1st grade will re-visit graphing before winter break.  For the next two days they will name/recognize coins and count on a given amount of money.

The students continue to work within their high numbers and activities that help them academically achieve mastery in order to work towards the next “high number.”

Quarter 2-Week 4

Hello First Grade Families,

Congratulations to our October Students of the Month at Oasis Academy!  You worked hard to display the Tribe Agreements, being a good friend, working hard, completing your homework and being a dedicated student!

Last week was a fun week in first grade!  The first Graders were busy, busy, busy!
Last week the class...
  • learned about different community types (urban, rural, suburban). The first graders drew a picture of one of the community types and wrote clues about that community type.
  •  read a story "Me on the Map"  and started to make our own little flip books about where we go to school and who is in charge.
    • We drew Oasis Academy and wrote about who is in charge
  • learned all about nouns by watching a short video with a very catchy tune. We will be learning more about nouns in the week to follow.
This week we will ...
  • begin adding nouns to our Noun Town that will include common, proper and possessive nouns.
  • add to our Me On The Map books. We will learn about our town, state and country and who is in charge of each of these wonderful places.
  • Our spelling pattern this week will be ump words (bump, dump, lump, clump etc.
Math News
Our first grade class has been working on graphing.  We have been very busy gathering and counting amounts of data.  The students have been displaying it as a pictograph, bar graph or tally chart.  The first grade standard states that your child must be able to organize, represent and interpret data with up to 3 categories AND ask/answer questions about the data in each category.  The 1st graders have really enjoyed creating their own ideas on gathering data and have had a fun time asking classmates and their teachers!  Mrs. Bloomfield and I hope to assess the 1st graders on graphing this week!

Qtr. 2-Week 3 - Halloween Slideshow

Hello First Grade Families,

Thank you for taking the time to meet with me for conferences.  If you have any questions or concerns do not hesitate to get a hold of me via email, phone call, or text.  Remember to set your clock back an hour so you don’t arrive to school an hour early on Monday morning.

We would also like to thank ALL parents/volunteers that made our Scholastic Book Fair such a success. It was the perfect time of year to hold the book fair and have such a decorative theme!  Remember that a percentage of the money that we made at the book fair is returned to Oasis Academy.

Last week in first grade:
  • We learned about fiction and nonfiction and sorted books into fiction and nonfiction piles.
  • We began learning about nonfiction text features including labels, bold words, pictures, captions, lists, timelines, and fun facts.
  • We began practicing putting words in alphabetical order.
  • The class listened to a story read aloud and then as a class we wrote a summary about the story, using the words somebody wanted..., but... so..., then...

This week in first grade:

  • We will begin our first project called “Where in the World Do We Live and Who is in Charge?”  We will begin learning about our school and town and what urban, suburban, and rural communities are.
  • We will continue to practice putting words in ABC order.
  • We will begin learning what nouns are.
  • We will begin writing about our own community.
  • Our spelling patter this week will include words in the unk family (chunk, spunky, junkyard)

Math News from Miss Garcia
Last week the 1st graders took and assessment on both addition & subtraction, word problems, True or False and adding the missing symbol (+/-) to complete an equation in order to make it “balance out.”  They were also busy creating their own addition and subtraction word problems with a partner.  We will use these word problems over the coming week to help us decide which type of word problem it is….Addition or Subtraction by using the word clues to help us decide.

Homework for Nov. 7th - 10th
Monday
Worksheet - Problem solving addition and subtraction
Tuesday
Worksheet - Graphing
Wednesday
Worksheet- Graphing
Thursday
IXL - O. 3 Interpret Bar Graphs
