Week of Oct 5.

Happy October!!!

First grade was a lot of fun last week.  We wrote about our favorite apple food item. We learned about Johnny Appleseed and followed step by step directions to draw a picture of him. They turned out great and both our portraits and our writings are in the hall.  We learned some new TRIBES energizers (gesture wave, and clap, clap, 85). During Daily 5 we focused on the chunking strategy and looking for known parts of unknown words. We also sorted digraph words (words with th, sh, ph, wh, ch etc.)

This week we will be looking at learning about pumpkins.  We are going to use a double-bubble map to compare apples and pumpkins. We are going to look at the difference between fact and opinion. In word study we are going to be learning different blends.  Our spelling patter will be ed and ug words.

PICTURE DAY REMINDER
Picture day for our class is on TUESDAY OCTOBER 6 at 8:30.  The picture packet was emailed to everyone.

Cool weather is here!  Please make sure to mark your child's jackets and sweaters with their name.

Nacho Wednesday
Nacho's will be sold every Wednesday for $3.  If your child would like to eat nacho's please send in a morning snack and some other items for them to each at lunch.

Math news from Miss Garcia

October 5, 2015

Dear First Grade Families,

It was a very busy week in first grade math.  Here are some of the concepts that we have worked on this past week!

We reviewed the counting on strategy to help us add.  This strategy is best used for counting on 1, 2, or 3.  Students really enjoy using the big number line in the hallway.

We also used ten frames to help us find missing addends with 10.  Since students know that a ten frame represents 10.  It was easy for students to see the missing addends using a ten frame.  If 10 is the whole, students would fill in the known part (in the example below 3) with counters.   The empty spots on the ten frame is the missing part or addend.
3 + = 10              3 + 7 = 10

Our final concept for the week was determining whether an equation is True or False.  Students did a fantastic job with this concept.  Not only did they need to state True or False, students also needed to justify their answer.

Here’s the homework for the coming week.

Monday
IXL D.1 Subtraction With Pictures Numbers Up to 10
Tuesday
IXL D.2 Subtraction Sentences With Numbers Up to 10
Wednesday
IXL D.16 Related Subtraction Facts

Have a great week!!

Sincerely,
Miss Garcia
