Quarter 4 -- Week 6

Hello First Grade Families.

What a Beautiful Weekend!! I hope everyone was able to get out and enjoy some of the sunshine. We only have 4 weeks of school left!! I Can’t believe how fast this year has gone by.

First graders still have a lot of learning to do in these last few days of school.  This will be our last week of spelling and formal reading groups. If your child doesn’t bring a book home please have them read a book of their choice.

In first grade last week we…
  • Added details to our narrative writings.
  • Discussed our wants and needs, how their parents and we can make money and learned all about consumer and producers,
  • We also identified that we trade money to get the goods we want and need.
This week in first grade…
  • We will begin writing our Small Moment Books (the final drafts).
  • Identify banks as a place to keep our money safe.
  • Explore consumer and producers and consumers in more depth.

Math News from Miss Garcia

We are down to the last 16 days of school!  We are also busy re-assessing most concepts taught in order to see if your child has mastered them by the end of the year.
Last week we focused on 2 different strategies: Branch Addition and Arrow Method.  These are two strategies that we like to introduce prior to second grade.  I am leaving them on the blog as a resource for both parents and students.

This week we will work with addition and subtraction equations.  The kids will determine the unknown numbers in addition and subtraction equations, which is review however, Mrs. Bloomfield and I are re-assessing this standard.
Examples:
8 + ___ = 11
5 = __ - 3
6 + __ = 13
__ - 8 = 4

The first graders also will review telling time to the hour an half hour using digital and analog clocks.

Monday
IXL D.3  Complete the addition sentence
Tuesday
IXL H.5  Complete the subtraction sentence
Wednesday

Branch Method Examples:
Example   31 + 6 = 52 + 12 =
                    ↙ ↘   ↘                                           ↙ ↘   ↙ ↘
                  30 + (1 + 6) =                                 50  2  10  2
30 + 7 = 37       (50+10) + (2+2) =
                                                                              60   +  4  = 64

Arrow Method Example:

53  +  34  =                1.  Start with the bigger addend (53).
   + 30     +4
53 83 87        2.  Draw an arrow.  Break down the other addend (34) into tens(30)
and ones (4).

                                 3.  Above the arrow write a plus sign and the amount of tens (+30).
Write the subtotal.after the arrow (83).

                                  4.  Draw another arrow after the subtotal. Above the arrow write a

plus sign and the amount of ones (+4).  Write the total (87).
