Week 8 -- With Slideshow

Happy Fall --
We had a wonderful week last week.  We finished up learning about community helpers by compiling our appreciation letters into a variety of books.  We presented our Sailors appreciation book to Mr. Campbell (Adrian's dad) who came in on Wednesday and shared what he did on the base with us.  We also had the ambulance crew come over and show us what they do when they come to help someone who is hurt. The kids got to tour the ambulance also. Jamie & Cristian did a wonderful job show the kids the ins and outs of the ambulance. A big Thank You to these wonderful community helpers.

The kids also brought in their family community helper dolls that show what their parents do to help our community with their work.  Everybody got so creative!! Throughout the week we watched a short video about how to make apple pie and then as a class we wrote the steps you take to make apple pie.  On Thursday we got to eat some apple pie in our pajamas as we got to wear pajamas to school to raise money for childhood cancer.  Watch the slideshows below to see what went on in first grade this week.

Math News from Miss Garcia

This week the 1st grade students had fun using the number lines that Mrs. Bloomfield and I created in the hallway.  At first the students worked with number lines in class by counting on and then writing and equation (6+2=8).  The next day we carried this concept one step further by going out into the hallway to use the “Big” number line.  As we used the number line to count on and add one number to another, we also used the Commutative Property to rewrite our equations!  Let me tell you, that is a mouthful for the kids to say and they usually end up saying “community property.”  Hahaha!  We are working on it!

The students are better at writing the Commutative Property than saying it!
Here’s an example of Commutative Property:
7 + 2 = 9
2 + 7 = 9

By introducing the students to the Commutative Property this concept will soon lead into Fact Families which we will be learning about soon.
Here’s an example of a Fact Family:
7 + 2 = 9
2 + 7 = 9
9 - 2 = 7
9 - 7 = 2

Fun Family Activities
Skip count by 10’s, 5’s and even 2’s driving in the car or playing outside.  Also work on counting on from any number up to 100.  Another fun activity is using a deck of cards or UNO cards and flipping two cards and comparing them using greater than, less than, equal too or taking two playing cards and writing them into an equation and adding them together.
