Week 9 -- October 10

Dear First Grade Families,

REMINDER:  Next week 10/17-10/21 is Fall Break and there will not be any school.

This is the final week of the first quarter, it always amazes me how fast time flies.  This week I will be completing report card assessments so students my not be taking home assigned books.  They will be allowed to take home books from our class library this week to look at and read or may read a book from home if they don't meet with me for reading groups.  Many of them will probably choose books that may not be at their reading level so please plan on sitting with your child each evening and reading with them.  Encourage them to read words that they know how to read.

Last week...
  •  We began the week with making homemade applesauce in a crockpot.
  •  The kids watched us peel the apples, chop them up, add sugar, cinnamon, and water and cook it.  It made our school smell so yummy!
  •  On Tuesday we all tasted warm applesauce and the kids began writing the steps of how to make applesauce on their own onto a graphic organizer.
This week we will write topic sentences and concluding sentences and begin writing a final draft of how to make applesauce that will be made up of 6 sentences. We will also be using our 5 senses to describe fall.

Our spelling pattern this week will be ed (sled, shred ect...) and ub words (club, hub, sub).

We had some firefighters come and visit us for our Community Helper project.  The Chief, Ralph Hamman, and Steve Hiskett (Stevie's dad) were able to come and talk to us what firefighters do to help protect us and our property.  They brought in a uniform that they wear to protect themselves in a fire and some of the kids got to try it on.  They loved their book of appreciations that they received from our first graders.

This week we will be visiting with some police officers and ER nurses and doctors to present our final community helper appreciations.
