Hello First Grade Families,
Thank you for taking the time to meet with me for conferences. If you have any questions or concerns do not hesitate to get a hold of me via email, phone call, or text. Remember to set your clock back an hour so you don’t arrive to school an hour early on Monday morning.
We would also like to thank ALL parents/volunteers that made our Scholastic Book Fair such a success. It was the perfect time of year to hold the book fair and have such a decorative theme! Remember that a percentage of the money that we made at the book fair is returned to Oasis Academy.
Last week in first grade:
- We learned about fiction and nonfiction and sorted books into fiction and nonfiction piles.
- We began learning about nonfiction text features including labels, bold words, pictures, captions, lists, timelines, and fun facts.
- We began practicing putting words in alphabetical order.
- The class listened to a story read aloud and then as a class we wrote a summary about the story, using the words somebody wanted..., but... so..., then...
This week in first grade:
- We will begin our first project called “Where in the World Do We Live and Who is in Charge?” We will begin learning about our school and town and what urban, suburban, and rural communities are.
- We will continue to practice putting words in ABC order.
- We will begin learning what nouns are.
- We will begin writing about our own community.
- Our spelling patter this week will include words in the unk family (chunk, spunky, junkyard)
Math News from Miss Garcia
Last week the 1st graders took and assessment on both addition & subtraction, word problems, True or False and adding the missing symbol (+/-) to complete an equation in order to make it “balance out.” They were also busy creating their own addition and subtraction word problems with a partner. We will use these word problems over the coming week to help us decide which type of word problem it is….Addition or Subtraction by using the word clues to help us decide.
