Quarter 2 -- Week 5 - SLIDESHOW

Dear First Grade Families,

Time sure does fly when you are having fun!!! We had a great week in first grade. This week we continued our Where in The World project and used Google Maps to look at where we go to school, our town, county, state and country.  We learned who the leaders are of these wonderful places. First graders wrote about all the great and fun things we have and can do in our community.  In language we learned about common and proper nouns.

On Thursday Mrs.  Beebe came in and we became scientist. We walked through the scientific method to conduct some really fun science experiments.  Ask your child to share some of the great learning that happened in our classroom. Below you will find a slide show of these fun experiments.

This week in First Grade:

  • We will not have any spelling words due to the short week.
  • We will begin some report card assessments instead of having reading groups.  There will not be assigned books this week.
  • We will learn about our continent (North America) and learn about the the three countries that are part of that continent (Canada, United States, and Mexico)
  • We will complete an ABC order assessment
  • We will listen to a Thanksgiving story and write the beginning, middle, and end of the story
  • We will practice writing 5 word sentences in nice handwriting about different pictures that have to do with Thanksgiving.

This week is we will only be in school on Monday and Tuesday.  We will not have normal reading homework this week. Mrs. Loop and I will be assessing first graders -- with our mid - quarter assessments.  It is always good to stay in the routine of reading daily. I will be sending home a reading log for your child to complete, if they choose to read over the Holiday. Remember this is optional.

Math News from Miss Garcia
Happy Monday!  Mrs. Bloomfield and I will be busy squeezing in ALL of the learning that we need on Monday and Tuesday before our Thanksgiving Break!

We noticed that the 1st graders are really struggling with graphing.  They are having trouble distinguishing between fewer and most.  Which goes back to finding the difference between two pieces of data.  Also, we have focused on addition and combining groups of however, this concept also crosses over into graphing because the students must combine certain groups to find a sum of how many students collected data.  We are noticing a gap in some of the academic vocabulary and how the students are unable to “link” it to reading the information on a graph.  1st grade will re-visit graphing before winter break.  For the next two days they will name/recognize coins and count on a given amount of money.

The students continue to work within their high numbers and activities that help them academically achieve mastery in order to work towards the next “high number.”
